Casa
Colibrì is the signature home in Marina Chacala's
Villa Blancas Development. Villas Blancas is a seven home
project developed, designed and constructed by Jaime Narro
in Guadalajara and in Marina Chacala. Villas Blancas is
a condominium development consisting of seven private residences
(each a separate structure) which share a large beautiful
pool and related pool facilities, including a palapa covered
outdoor patio area and bathrooms. Members of Villas Blancas
share in the common expenses of the condominium which include
the salary for a gardener and common area pool cleaning
and maintenance.
The
total square footage of the Casa Colibrì is 4,600.
This includes the palapa space of 770 sq. ft, main building
space of 2,780 sq. ft. and patio spaces of 1,149 sq. ft.
This square footage does not include the bodega, laundry
area, carport and storage space.
Casa
Colibrì is set on a lot of 600 square meters (6,458
square feet). Its proportionate share of the common area
of the Villas Blancas condominium is approximately another
600 square meters. However, because Casa Colibrì
is built on the edge of high ridge overlooking the sea and
the village of Chacala, a large portion of the common area
of the condominium is located between this home and the
village, providing a large private lush setting.
The
home is nestled snugly among three very tall palm trees,
each engulfed by incredible strangling fig trees that use
the palms for its foundation. (One of these palms is actually
incorporated into the stairway to the second floor of the
house.) The view through the palapa of the ocean, the village
of Chacala and the absolutely gigantic fig tree that dominates
the hill sloping away from the palapa.
The
home consists of two spaces: the main building and the outside
palapa.
The
main building has four large bed rooms (much larger than
usually found in similar homes). Three of the rooms have
beautiful views of the sea and the village and the two rooms
on the second floor share a spacious porch. The fourth overlooks
a garden area and the palapa. Each bedroom has a full bathroom.
The bathroom in the master suite on the second floor has
large windows with a fabulous view out over the ocean.
The
other second floor bedroom has a built inoffice work area
which is perfect for conducting any kind of business. The
desk area is equipped with electrical outlets and telephone
jacks. With high speed Internet and a Vonage phone, the
current owners have regularly conducted their business in
the same manner as if they were in the United States.
All
of the bedrooms have separately controlled air conditioners.
However, the usual winter weather in Chacala, while comfortably
warm, rarely requires air conditioning. The current owners
only use air conditioning during summer visits to their
Mexican home.
The
first floor living area in the main building consists of
the two downstairs bedrooms and a central living area. This
living area consists of an area for TV watching, (the house
has satellite cable TV) reading, and includes a full kitchen.
This living area may be closed off by 19 foot sliding glass
doors. These doors are usually fully opened during the day
and closed at night. When closed and locked, the main building
is completely secure. Through these doors, it is only a
few steps down to the outside palapa.
The
outside palapa is an almost magical place. Its peaked roof
is thatched in palapa palms and the floor is made of insect
and rot resistant primavera wood, cantilevered over the
hill leading down to the village. The space contains seating
areas, a dining area and a kitchen. During the eight months
of the dry season, this is the living area of choice. The
palapa is wired for sound from a central location with outdoor
speakers.
Cooking
on the palapa is a dream. The kitchen has a sink, refrigerator,
stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher and plenty of cabinet
space. A large food preparation island allows any chef to
participate in the palapa activities while getting dinner
on the tables. Even clean up is special as the sink has
a direct view out over the ocean.
Besides
these main living areas, the home also has two gorgeous
patio areas. The first and most fascinating is the roof
top of the main building. Here, high above Chacala the owners
have created a special space for yoga in the morning, lunch
in the afternoon, cocktails in the evening and sleeping
under the mosquito net late at night. The views from this
terrace are breathtaking and the bird watching in the morning
and the evening is phenomenal. Parts of this terrace are
literally in the trees. The terrace has a sink, a small
cupboard space, and a cushioned seating area (covered by
bamboo screening) that often is converted into sleeping
space. This terrace is also wired for sound with outdoor
speakers. The owners have also begun populating the terrace
with large potted plants.
The
second patio area is located just to the side of the palapa.
This area is a quiet, protected spot that is sunny for a
lot of the day, perfect for reading sun bathing and enjoying
the nature around you. The area around this patio is well
landscaped with many beautiful flowering plants.
Besides
the living area, the Casa Colibrì has practical storage
space that is truly rare in most Mexican resort homes. The
home includes a large two car carport. The adjacent bodega
(with lockable door) has 100 square feet of storage area,
including space for a laundry. Also attached to the bodega
is an enclosed area for hanging laundry. There is also a
large storage area under the stairway of the main building
which is enclosed with a lockable door.
Inside
the main building, each of the bedrooms has significant
closet space, with a fifth large closet located just outside
of the two bedrooms on the second floor.
The
home has a large cistern for backup water if the main water
system is temporarily out of service. The system has a large
pressure tank to insure adequate water pressure. The water
heater is an on demand system, saving on heating costs.
A sizable propane tank (located out of sight in the clothes
line area) provides the fuel for the water heater and the
stoves.
Telephone
service, including high speed internet, are connected to
the home.
The
full-time on-sight gardener maintains the swimming pool
and the common and private gardens. Villas Blancas common
areas are always in excellent condition. Arrangements for
housekeeping services can be made. Casa Colibri Photo Gallery -
